Harald Oestberg Amundsen and Jessie Diggins in control of Tour de Ski

Harald Oestberg Amundsen seized control of the Tour de Ski with a convincing win in the men’s 20km freestyle pursuit.

The Norwegian finished 32.9 seconds clear of compatriot Erik Valnes, who came into the race in the leader’s yellow bib, with Amundsen now 32 seconds ahead after the three races in Toblach.

Completing a clean sweep of the podium for Norway was Jan Thomas Jenssen, who posted the fastest time of the day, although he had set off too late in the pursuit format to challenge for the World Cup victory.

Jenssen is now up to third in the Tour de Ski standings, one of six men within two seconds of one another, but more than a minute back on Amundsen.

The Tour de Ski leader made his move at 15km, having skied with Valnes for the first three-quarters of the race.

He said: “Erik Valnes and I talked about the fact that we had to work together at the beginning. He knew what my plan was; that I wanted to go hard the last the last two laps, and that he was just going to try to keep up.”

In the women’s 20km freestyle pursuit, there was no one who could match Jessie Diggins, who finished a full 46.5 seconds clear of Victoria Carl to take victory.

Diggins set off with a seven-second advantage over the German and quickly extended that as she left the rest of the field in her wake.

Carl was able to hold off the chasing pack to take second with Linn Svahn third, 1.7 seconds further back.

Diggins now leads the Tour de Ski by 47 seconds from Carl, with Swedish duo Svahn and Jonna Sundling a second further back. Diggins also extended her overall World Cup lead to 115 points from Sweden’s Emma Ribom.

The Tour de Ski now moves to Davos with the freestyle sprint on Wednesday.
