Championship League snooker: Kyren Wilson sets pace in Group 2 with Mark Selby and Ali Carter in hunt
Kyren Wilson enjoyed three straight wins on Thursday to set the pace at the summit of Championship League Group 2 in Leicester.
The 2020 world finalist lost 3-0 to Group 1 winner Stuart Bingham in the last four of the opening group phase at the Morningside Arena on Wednesday, but quickly rediscovered his form with wins over Mark Selby (3-1), Matthew Selt (3-1) and Chris Waklen (3-0).
Selby, Selt and Ali Carter joined Group 2 alongside the highest-placed players from Group 1 in Ryan Day, Gary Wilson, Kyren Wilson and Chris Wakelin.
Four-time world champion Selby enjoyed a 3-1 win over Day before producing a 115 break in a 3-1 victory over Gary Wilson in his home city to remain in the hunt for a spot in the Group 2 semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Carter completed 3-0 wins over Gary Wilson and Day that included a majestic 142, but lost 3-0 to former Shoot Out winner Wakelin, who picked up his second win of the day with a 3-0 success against Selt.
Selt finished a 3-2 win over Day with a 109 knock.
Seven players face each other in the group stage with the top four players from each group progressing to the play-offs.
The champion from each group progresses to the winners’ group on March 1 and 2, with the other top four players continuing to Group 2 as the bottom two players are eliminated at the end of each group.
The winner of the Championship League earns a spot in the Champion of Champions later this year.
The Masters starts at Alexandra Palace on January 7, with world champion Luca Brecel opening up against Jack Lisowski.
