Florida 2-year-old fell in fire pit, burning 18% of his body

A 2-year-old Florida boy suffered severe burns across 18% of his body in a freak accident during a camping trip — when he tripped and fell into a fire pit.

Finny, of St. Cloud, was running and playing with a bubble wand on New Year’s Day when he tumbled backward into the fire pit at the campsite in Gainesville, Fox 35 reported.

“When I grabbed him, his pants were melting. They were like a nylon material and they were melting. They melted to me and I ripped them off,” his mom, Tabitha Shay, told the outlet.

“He just randomly ran backwards straight into a fire,” Finny’s dad, Jeff Strait, told Fox 35.

“You know, what are the chances that happens? It’s hard not to blame yourself at first.”

Shay said doctors told her that her older son, Weston, 11, prevented Finny from suffering even worse injuries when he reached into the flames to rescue the toddler.

“He grabbed Finny’s sweater and he told me, ‘Mom, it took me a second to process what was happening.’ And then I said, ’Oh my gosh!’ and I just pulled him out,” Shay told Fox 35.

“Somehow he managed to do that without getting any boo-boos on himself, which is a miracle. But we are very, very proud of him. Very proud,” she said.

Finny was rushed to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he is being treated for second- and third-degree burns, according to the outlet.

The parents said they were overwhelmed by the support they’ve received from hospital staff, family and friends.

“I thought I had a handful of friends, and it turns out I have a whole village of friends,” Shay said.

“I’m relieved how many people have reached out to us for help. From the bottom of our hearts, we really appreciate it,” Strait added.

The family has set up a GoFundMe donation page to help with the costs.

“Imagine starting the New Year with a phone call from your son telling you that your grandson is heading to the hospital because he fell into the campfire. My heart stopped,” Tami Basye wrote in the fundraiser.

She said Finny’s burns covered the back of his legs as well as his hand.

“He is expected to make a full recovery thank God but it’s going to take some time. My son and his wife have four kids and they’re all stuck out of town supporting each other,” Basye wrote.

“Both parents are missing work. Once out of the hospital Finny will need continued healing time at home before returning to daycare,” she added.
