‘Uncomfortable bras that pushed me down’
Anything for the part!
Sofia Vergara may have showed off her famous curves as Gloria in “Modern Family” for 10 years, but for her role as drug lord Griselda Blanco it was the complete opposite.
The Colombian actress, 51, revealed what it took to transformation into her character for the upcoming Netflix series, “Griselda,” in a new interview.
“The hardest thing was that I had to wear a wig, fake teeth, fake nose, and have a plastic forehead. I also had to wear uncomfortable bras that pushed me down to make me look less Latin,” she said during an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” which airs Friday.
“It was a complicated character for me, but it was my first film in Spanish which was so liberating,” she added.
Vergara revealed that she first had the idea for the show nearly 15 years ago.
“It is a true story of a woman that no one ever suspected of being one of the biggest drug dealers that ever existed,” she said on the British program.
“She created an insane cartel, and I went crazy for the story. She was Colombian, an immigrant, and a very tough ruthless woman. She was a monster. It was the role for me!”
Blanco, who had the nicknames “cocaine queen” and “The Godmother,” was a real-life female drug kingpin who headed one of the most lucrative cartels in history and helped turn Miami into a war zone in the 1980s. She also ordered the deaths of all her husbands, which earned her the additional nickname “The Black Widow.”
Blanco was arrested in 1985 and charged with conspiring to manufacture, import and distribute cocaine. After being sentenced to 15 years behind bars, she was released from prison in 2004.
The six-episode series was first announced in November.
“Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion-dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about,” the “America’s Got Talent” judge said in a statement at the time.
“Griselda” debuts on Netflix on January 25.
