Cameron Norrie confident he is ‘going to be good’ for 2024 Australian Open despite ASB Classic withdrawal

Britain’s Cameron Norrie thinks he is “going to be good” for the 2024 Australian Open, despite withdrawing from the ASB Classic with an injury.

Norrie pulled out of the ATP 250 tournament in Auckland ahead of the quarter-finals, citing a wrist issue.

The 28-year-old had felt pain in his wrist after his round-of-16 victory against France’s Luca Van Assche.

Norrie admitted he was “concerned” about the injury, but was ultimately confident he would be able to play in the Australian Open, which will be shown live on Eurosport and discovery+.

“We’re managing [the injury] with my team,” he said. “It was better today, which is positive. I couldn’t play Auckland so obviously I’m concerned.

“It’s feeling better. I think I’m going to be good. Luckily I’m scheduled to play on Tuesday, so I have a few more days and I’m looking forward to practice tomorrow.”

Norrie, the 19th seed at the upcoming Grand Slam in Melbourne, will take on Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas in the first round on Tuesday, January 16.

The furthest he’s gone at the tournament is the third round, which he achieved last year and in 2021.

Norrie got off to an excellent start last season, reaching the ASB Classic and Argentina Open final, and triumphing at the Rio Open.

But he suffered a decline in form in the second half of the year, attributing his performances to feeling a “bit burnt out”.

Novak Djokovic is another player struggling with a wrist injury in the run-up to the 2024 Australian Open, which starts on Sunday, January 14 and concludes on Sunday, January 28.

He struggled with the issue during a defeat to Alex de Minaur at the United Cup earlier this month, but the 24-time Grand Slam champion has said his wrist is now “good” ahead of his Australian Open first round match against Dino Prizmic.
