Judd Trump comes from behind to reach World Grand Prix last 16 with win over Jamie Jones

Judd Trump came from two frames down to beat Jamie Jones 4-2 at the World Grand Prix in Leicester on Monday night.

Trump was looking to get over the disappointment of his Masters semi-final defeat to Ali Carter, but he was soon on the receiving end of another player finding form as Jones scored 103 in a single visit to take the lead.

In the second frame, Jones moved 30-0 clear before the pair exchanged a lengthy spell of safety play with all but one of the reds tightly bunched. Trump fought back to within eight points, only for Jones to scrap his way to the frame, leaving the 2019 world champion in trouble.

However, a fluid half century from Trump presented him the chance to halve the deficit in the third frame.

In the fourth, the reds were spread across the table early and a brilliant long pot allowed Trump to get the first points on the board. Although he soon found himself in a tricky position to escape from, moments later Jones accidentally the potted white and allowed Trump back in to build a break. Trump rode his luck when a missed pot rattled the bottom-left jaw only to swing in the bottom right, with a break of 81 putting him back on level terms.

The former world No. 1 carried his good form into the fifth frame and he earned a strong position around the reds when he powered into the bunch with some powerful cueing, and he closed it out to go ahead for the first time in the match with a break of 45.

He then cruised into the last 16 with a break of 77, where he will play the winner of Lyu Haotian’s match with Chris Wakelin.
