‘SATC’ creator Candace Bushnell blames men at Netflix’s ‘Ponzi scheme’ for robbing her of royalties
And just like that … Candace Bushnell is cut out of “Sex and the City” further profits.
The creator of the beloved franchise revealed that she will not receive any royalties after the show’s six seasons transferred to Netflix from HBO Max.
“All of these men who are in charge of things, they just keep moving these cards around to make money because every time they move the cards around somebody’s skimming,” Bushnell, 65, seethed during a Times of London interview on Saturday.
“The way men do business is a Ponzi scheme,” she added.
“The percentage of women in the 1 percent who made their own money is about 3.5 percent, and that’s shocking,” Bushnell told the outlet.
Bushnell’s iconic show, which ran on HBO from 1998 to 2004, follows the intricate personal lives of Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes and Samantha Jones ( played by Sara Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall respectively) as they navigate New York City at the turn of the century.
According to Bushnell, HBO offered her an initial sum of $100,000 in order to obtain the rights to her book of the same name in order to adapt it into a screenplay.
The franchise has since expanded to include two films a spinoff series titled “And Just Like That” which is set to return for a third season in the summer of 2025.
Season 3’s release date was quietly announced during a “One To Watch” promo that dropped on Max’s YouTube page toward the end of last year.
Due to the Writers Guild of America and then the subsequent SAG-AFTRA strike, filming hasn’t even started yet.
There are currently no details available about what awaits Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends in the upcoming season, though the show is likely to pick up after she and her longtime love Aidan (John Corbett) split.
One thing that can be confirmed is that Sara Ramirez was reportedly fired from the series after a report from the Daily Mail claimed that the actress’ character, Che Diaz, was labeled by fans as a “waste of airtime”
Ramirez, 48, also claimed that their axing from the from the Max series because of their pro-Palestinian politics, including their participation in several pro-Palestinian marches.
“While they give awards away, casting directors and agents are making blacklists of actors and workers who post anything in support of Palestinians in Gaza to ensure they will not work again,” they wrote.
However, a source close to “And Just Like That …” told the Daily Mail that Ramirez had been “on the chopping block since last season” over creative concerns over their character.
“Sara was not fired because they support Palestine and the cease-fire,” the source told DailyMail.com.
“Sara was fired because Che brought nothing to the show anymore. After Che split with Miranda, the character really held no value anymore and fans found them annoying.”
Another character who may make an appearance is Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones.
In the long-awaited cameo at the end of season 2, Samantha calls Carrie to inform her that she has been delayed at London’s Heathrow airport, much to her friend’s surprise.
Sitting in the back of a black town car and wearing a red outfit complemented by a silver trench coat and a lime green purse, Samantha reveals that she was on her way to the Big Apple after Miranda and Charlotte told her about Carrie’s “last supper” in her old apartment.
“Sex and the City” is set to hit Netflix in April 2024.
