India v England, fourth Test, day two – Bashir has India reeling after England reach 353 in first innings

This feels like one of the great off-spining performances for England in India already.

What a performance this is from Bashir. From the first ball of the over he was unlucky as Sarafaraz edged him between keeper and Root at slip for four, but then he got the big wicket as a ball kept low and hit the stumps via the foot of Jaiswal’s bat.

Sarfaraz thought he was run out and so did England but the back of his bat was grounded behind the line before Foakes took the bails off. A very fortunate batsman.

Joe Root scored a magnificent century to lead England’s fightback on a tricky pitch on the first day of the fourth Test against India, ending on 106 as England finished on 302-7.

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and batted on a pitch at Ranchi that was expected to deteriorate as the game went along, but it was lively straight from the off.

Mohammed Siraj, the senior seamer with Jasprit Bumrah rested, struggled to find his line early on and he was upstaged by debutant Akash Deep who took the wickets of England openers Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope.

Root however, steadied the ship for the tourists, finishing the day on 106 with Robinson unbeaten alongside him on 31 as England clawed their way back from 112-5 to end the day 302-7.
