India v England, fourth Test, day two – Bashir has India reeling after England reach 353 in first innings

India 161-5 (Sarfaraz 10, Jurel 0): Overs 47

This feels like one of the great off-spining performances for England in India already.

WICKET! Jaiswal b Bashir 73

What a performance this is from Bashir. From the first ball of the over he was unlucky as Sarafaraz edged him between keeper and Root at slip for four, but then he got the big wicket as a ball kept low and hit the stumps via the foot of Jaiswal’s bat.

India 156-4 (Jaiswal 73, Sarfaraz 5): Overs 46

Just the single from Hartley’s over.

India 155-4 (Jaiswal 73, Sarfaraz 4): Overs 45

Another fine cut from Jaiswal brings up the India 150.

India 149-4 (Jaiswal 68, Sarfaraz 3): Overs 44

The first ball reared up from Hartley beating Jaiswal and Foakes.

India 146-4 (Jaiswal 67, Sarfaraz 3): Overs 43

Two fours from Jaiswal. A cut just wide of slip and then a beautiful lofted drive over the covers.

India 137-4 (Jaiswal 58, Sarfaraz 3): Overs 42

Hartley has his rhythm now, bowling a little quicker and the Indian batsmen are struggling to get him away.

India 136-4 (Jaiswal 57, Sarfaraz 3): Overs 41

Sarfaraz thought he was run out and so did England but the back of his bat was grounded behind the line before Foakes took the bails off. A very fortunate batsman.

India 134-4 (Jaiswal 56, Sarfaraz 2): Overs 40

Two runs off Hartley’s over. The first through a streaky leading edge from Jaiswal.

India 132-4 (Jaiswal 55, Sarfaraz 1) Overs: 39

Bashir back into bowl and right back on the mark. Jaiswal treating him with a great deal of respect, as well he might.

Tea: India 131-4, England 353 all out

India 132-4 (Jaiswal 55, Sarfaraz 1) Overs: 39

Bashir back into bowl and right back on the mark. Jaiswal treating him with a great deal of respect, as well he might.

Day One recap: Magnificent Root century leads England fightback after Deep shines on debut

Joe Root scored a magnificent century to lead England’s fightback on a tricky pitch on the first day of the fourth Test against India, ending on 106 as England finished on 302-7.

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and batted on a pitch at Ranchi that was expected to deteriorate as the game went along, but it was lively straight from the off.

Mohammed Siraj, the senior seamer with Jasprit Bumrah rested, struggled to find his line early on and he was upstaged by debutant Akash Deep who took the wickets of England openers Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope.

Root however, steadied the ship for the tourists, finishing the day on 106 with Robinson unbeaten alongside him on 31 as England clawed their way back from 112-5 to end the day 302-7.
