Jenny DuVander earns Guinness World Record for largest tongue circumference
This mom has a taste for the record books.
Oregon mother Jenny DuVander notched a world record when she was crowned for having the largest tongue circumference for a female, Guinness World Records announced Tuesday.
The girth of DuVander’s tongue measures a whopping 5.21 inches — wider than the size of a soda can.
“It’s pretty weird looking,” she admitted in a press release issued by the Guinness World Record.
To get the circumference, DuVander’s doctor wrapped dental floss around her tongue and then used a ruler to measure the floss, according to footage posted online by the record-tracking entity this week.
The Portland resident originally sought the record out after reading the 2023 Guinness World Records book with her son at bedtime and seeing a photo of the male record holder.
“I didn’t know that tongue circumference was a thing!” she said. “Right away, I had to measure mine at home and saw that it was at least 12 centimeters.”
DuVander says the size of her huge tongue doesn’t have much use practically speaking, but it’s valuable when comparing tongue tricks with other people — and may even help her musical aspirations.
“I also play the flute, and a strong tongue is pretty useful for playing fast notes,” the Portland mom said.
She credited her son for encouraging her to seek the record.
“My son, Evan, loves ‘Guinness World Records’ and pores through the hardcover books every year,” she said. “My record is definitely inspired by his love of facts and human abilities.”
West Virginia resident Braydon McCullough has the largest tongue circumference that belongs to a man — a record he took home in May 2023.
His tongue measured 6.3 inches in circumference, according to the Guinness World Record, which is similar to the circumference of a lemon.
