Freiburg 2-2 Bayern Munich: Lucas Holer strikes late for hosts to leave Bavarian side’s title bid in tatters
Bayern Munich’s slim hopes of sealing a 12th successive Bundesliga title took a major blow after a frustrating 2-2 draw against Freiburg on Friday.
Christian Gunter gave Freiburg the lead before Mathys Tel and Jamal Musiala found the target for the visitors to complete the comeback, only for Lucas Holer to steal a draw in the dying stages.
Following a frantic moment which saw Manuel Neuer make an outrageous close-range save from Roland Sallai before the striker struck the bar with an overhead kick on the rebound, Freiburg opened the scoring when the ball drifted to the edge of the box which Gunter met with a stunning low strike.
Neuer made another big stop to deny Freiburg and Gunter a second before Bayern pulled level out of nowhere. Teenager Tel shifted onto his right foot and produced a pinpoint curled effort from the edge of the box to send the ball into the far top corner.
Musiala produced a moment of magic to weave in between three players before bending the ball across the face of goal and into the far corner.
Bayern thought they had the game won, but Holer had other ideas as he hooked the ball over Neuer’s head to seal a point for the hosts.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are now seven points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen and have played a game more.
Talking Point – Have Bayern blown their last chance?
They could have closed the gap to five points with victory, albeit leaving Leverkusen with a game in hand, but now that gap could be stretched to 10 points by Sunday night.
Things are looking bleak for Tuchel’s side, who are without a win in four matches following that crushing defeat at Leverkusen which gave the leaders a monumental title boost.
It looks like Bayern, and Harry Kane, will end the season trophyless unless they can pull off something special in the UEFA Champions League.
Player of the Match – Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich)
The 21-year-old looked like the only bright spark in the Bayern team. He was involved in everything going forward and topped off a brilliant display with a magical goal, that deserved to be the winner.

Match Highlights
12’ – GOAL!!! FREIBURG 1-0 BAYERN MUNICH (GUNTER): After a crazy few seconds, Freiburg take the lead! Roland Sallai forces an unbelievable close-range stop from Manuel Neuer, and then the Freiburg striker hits the bar on the rebound from an overhead kick. The ball is headed back and forth between the sides on the edge of the box, before it falls to Christian Gunter who produces a sensational strike on the half-volley, sending the ball across Neuer and into the far right corner. What a goal!
15’ – BIG STOP NEUER! The German goalkeeper stops it going from bad to worse for Bayern. It’s the left-back Gunter again, who finds himself in behind the Bayern defence. He’s at an angle, but Neuer closes down his shot well.
23’ – FREIBURG COME SO CLOSE TO A SECOND! This is a defensive disaster class from Bayern, they’re all over the shop! Freiburg drive forward in numbers and there is a noticeable gap appearing, which Sallai runs into. The ball is slipped into him, he cuts back inside on his right foot and sends the shot agonisingly wide of the right post. Bayern need to wake up!
35’ – GOAL!! FREIBURG 1-1 BAYERN (TEL): Tel scores on his first start of the season to pull Bayern level and what an unbelievable strike it is! The youngster uses his strength to win the ball on the edge of the box, shifts onto his right foot and sends a wonderful effort across goal and into the far top corner. A moment to remember for the 18-year-old! Game on!
48’ – KANE DRAGS WIDE! Wow! How many times have we seen him put those away? He lets the ball run across his body and onto his left foot where he pulls the trigger, looking for the far bottom corner, but drags his shot wide.
79’ – GOAL!! FREIBURG 1-2 BAYERN (MUSIALA): There it is! Bayern have their goal and how huge could that be in the title race? It’s Musiala who finishes, dribbling into the box and weaving between three players before bending the ball into the far corner. What a goal! And he deserves it!
86’ – GOAL!! FREIBURG 2-2 BAYERN (HOLER): The hosts are level! A long throw-in is sent into the box and Lucas Holer swipes a leg at it, looping the ball over Neuer. That was far too easy and Bayern find themselves in a difficult position again!
