Tennessee groom killed in car crash while traveling to honeymoon with bride day after wedding
A newlywed husband was killed in a car crash Monday while traveling to his honeymoon with his bride — one day after the couple tied the knot, according to reports.
Daniel Palacios III, 27, and his wife, Christy Carrillo, 23, were driving on I-40 in Tennessee when their Toyota 4Runner swerved off the road and struck a dirt embankment, the Tennessee highway patrol told WREG Memphis.
The couple’s pickup truck then flipped multiple times before it crossed into oncoming traffic and was hit by a semi-truck.
Palacios was killed in the crash, the Fayette County fire chief confirmed to the outlet. Carillo sustained injuries but survived.
Palacios — an independently contracted truck driver — was not wearing his seatbelt when the fatal crash happened, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The crash happened in the afternoon on I-40 in Fayette County, about 40 miles outside of Memphis.
Palacios was killed the day following their wedding ceremony, his father, Daniel Palacios Jr., confirmed to the Daily Mail.
“I lost a son but gained a daughter,” his father told the outlet.
The couple became engaged in September 2023.
He said his daughter-in-law was “banged up and emotionally distraught” from the crash and losing her husband but has since been released from the hospital.
“She will be OK,” he told the outlet.
Video of the aftermath of the tragic wreck was shared to WREG by a passerby.
“When I got closer to the wreck, looks like back tire might’ve blown out and hit the median and flipped about twenty times,” Dennis Vann told the outlet.
Vann, a frequent traveler on I-40, described the extent of the damage from the wreck as the most severe he had ever seen.
Palacios Jr. wrote a touching message on Facebook that his son’s funeral will be held on March 16 and thanked everyone for their “expressions of love and most of all the prayers” while the family grapples with the tragedy.
The newlywed husband’s death is the latest tragedy to take place on I-40 in Tennessee.
Hours after Palacios was killed, a plane carrying three children and two adults crashed on the highway as it approached John C. Tune Airport in Nashville, about 200 miles away.
Chilling video emerged showing the single-engine airplane crashing alongside the highway and erupting into a fiery blaze moments after the pilot warned the plane, “I won’t make it.”
All five victims died in the crash.
