‘I haven’t succeeded like Julia’

George Clooney may be a Hollywood A-lister and an Oscar winner, but he still doesn’t think he has conquered the romantic-comedy market.

The “Good Night and Good Luck” director, 61, appears in the upcoming flick “Ticket to Paradise” with co-star and longtime pal Julia Roberts. The two play a divorced couple who are determined to stop their daughter’s wedding.

“They sent me the script [for ‘Ticket to Paradise’], and it was clearly written for Julia and I,” he said in an interview with Roberts, 54, for the New York Times. 

“In fact, the characters’ names were originally Georgia and Julian. I hadn’t really done a romantic comedy since ‘One Fine Day’ [in 1996],” the “E.R.” alum added.

“I haven’t succeeded like Julia has in that forum — but I read it and thought, ‘Well, if Jules is up for it, I think this could be fun.’”

The “Mystic Pizza” star has had her own fair share of starring in romantic comedies, cementing her A-list status in films such as “Pretty Woman,” “Runaway Bride,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Valentine’s Day” and “Notting Hill.”

Roberts chimed in: “It somehow only made sense with George, just based on our chemistry. Also, George and I felt a lot of happy responsibility in wanting to make a comedy together, to give people a holiday from life after the world had gone through a really hard time.”

Elsewhere in the interview, she noted how Clooney rescued her during the pandemic. The two were filming “Ticket to Paradise” in Australia and had to quarantine next to each other at times. While Roberts had to stay by herself, Clooney and his wife Amal were together with their kids in a place nearby.

“The Clooneys saved me from complete loneliness and despair,” she admitted. “We were in a bubble, and it’s the longest I’ve ever been away from my family. I don’t think I’ve spent that much time by myself since I was 25.”

“Ticket to Paradise” hits theaters October 21.
