Oprah Winfrey blasted for defending Meghan Markle, Prince Harry
Oprah Winfrey is getting some heat for suggesting that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can make peace with the royal family amid the mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, who died last week.
Winfrey got candid with “Extra” on Monday about her pal Markle, 41, and her husband, Harry, 37, specifically regarding their strained relationship with his father, King Charles III, brother Prince William and sister-in-law Kate Middleton.
“This is what I think: I think in all families — you know, my father passed recently, this summer — and when all families come together for a common ceremony, the ritual of, you know, burying your dead, there’s an opportunity for peacemaking,” “The Color Purple” actress said.
She went on, “Hopefully, there will be that.”
Users across social media have slammed the 68-year-old media personality for her comments about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s rocky relationship with the new king and Prince of Wales.
“Oprah talks about ‘burying the dead’ and says she hopes it will help Prince Harry and Meghan ‘make peace’ with the royals. She’s priceless isn’t she,” one user wrote. “Never scrutinized a word [Harry and Meghan] said… She calls herself a serious talk show host.”
Another person added: “Oprah forgets she started this. Maybe an apology would help with the peacemaking.”
“Hey @Oprah if you cared for that family you wouldn’t have given them a platform to badmouth the RF family. After your interview the anger between them widened. So stop the BS talk,” someone else slammed the TV producer.
The “Oprah Winfrey Show” host famously interviewed Harry and Markle last March, in a bombshell tell-all at their California home. In the interview, Markle spoke about contemplating suicide, alleged racism within the Firm and more.
Winfrey’s words followed a weekend event where the Invictus Games founder and the former “Suits” star reunited with Prince William and Kate Middleton to honor the late monarch in a walkabout outside Windsor Castle.
A source told Page Six recently that William, 40, had extended the invitation to the estranged couple.
“We are all very grateful — both sides putting all things aside for the queen,” the insider said.
The monarch died at age 96 on Sept. 8 and her funeral is set to take place on Sept. 19. It’s unknown if Markle or Prince Harry will attend the services.
