University of Miami fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon shut down

A University of Miami frat was shut down after allegations that members drugged drinks and took part in ugly chants at a rager earlier this month surfaced, according to reports.

The Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter closed its doors Friday after it was on campus since 1949, according to NBC South Florida.

The fraternity faced an investigation after anonymous reports of spiked drinks were brought forward and video allegedly showing frat members chanting about violence toward women before the party got underway came to light, the television station reported.

“The National Headquarters received admissible information that SigEp members violated policy and engaged in actions that are not aligned with the values of this Fraternity,” Sigma Phi Epsilon chief communication officer Heather Matthews said in a statement to NBC South Florida.

“We expect SigEp chapters to provide their members and campus community a safe and supportive environment.

“That’s the cornerstone of a positive Fraternity and university experience, so we take that expectation seriously and hold our chapters to that standard.”

A Miami Herald report detailed how the chant in the video was a song about having sex with a dead woman after she died while giving fellatio.

A University of Miami spokesperson told the Miami Herald the school received a video that violated university policy, but did not specify what the video was.

When the video was received Friday, the college took immediate disciplinary action and alerted the national headquarters of the fraternity, a spokesperson told the Herald.

One girl, who only went by Abby, told The Miami Hurricane she and her friend had white powder in their drinks and after the party heard from other girls who were at the bash that said they thought they were roofied or knew someone who thought they were.

Another girl, who only went by Mary and is in a sorority, said she heard about similar allegations in a group text with other sorority sisters, the student newspaper reported.

No criminal charges connected to the party have been reported.

Sigma Phi Epsilon hosted the “Adult Swim” party on Oct. 1.

The university in a statement said school leaders supported ending the chapter’s run on campus.

“UM continually communicates a clear set of policies and expectations to all of our Greek organizations that are designed to encourage a safe, healthy, and positive experience for UM students,” the university said in a statement to WSVN.

“The university received allegations the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter violated university policy and participated in behavior that is inconsistent with the values and expectations of the university community and their national fraternity.

“We have partnered with Sigma Phi Epsilon for 73 years, and we support their decision to close the chapter effective immediately.”
