Robert Maverick Vargo indicted for threats to kill Joe Biden

An incarcerated Pennsylvania man was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on charges he threatened to kill President Biden, the chairman of the House select committee probing last year’s Capitol riot, and a federal judge, the Justice Department said.

Robert Maverick Vargo, of Berwick, made the threats in a letter he sent to Rep. Bennie Thompson’s office which named the Mississippi Democrat, Thompson’s family, the president and US District Judge Robert Mariani, the US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania alleged in a statement.

Prosecutors added that the letter alluded to anthrax and contained a white powder that was later determined not to be dangerous.

Vargo sent the letter from the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre, the feds said.

Vargo’s letter arrived at Thompson’s office Oct. 11 and noted his role on the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol, Scranton US Attorney Gerard Karam said.

“Im going to kill you! I will make you feel the rest of our pain & suffering,” the letter read.

“There is nowhere or nobody who can keep you from me. I am going to kill you & those you love. I promise you that I will keep my promise until the day of my death,” the letter added, according to federal prosecutors.

“You & Joe Biden soon will face death for the wrongs you’ve done to US,” it continued.

US Capitol Police said at the time that officers were investigating a “suspicious letter” with “concerning language” that was sent to the Rayburn House Office Building last Tuesday and said that the envelope did not contain anything dangerous.

Vargo was in the news in July when he escaped a work detail that was part of the Luzerne County jail’s minimal offenders unit. He was recaptured days later in Myrtle Beach, SC.
