Matthew Perry spotted looking healthy after revelation that he nearly died
Matthew Perry, 53, was spotted for the first time since revealing that he spent weeks in a coma and nearly died from his opioid addiction.
The “Friends” star was photographed in Los Angeles last week looking healthier than he has in recent years.
Perry was seen running errands with an unnamed female friend seeming to enjoy a casual outing.
Perry is believed to be single since his split with fiancée Molly Hurwitz last year when he was also called out for matching with young women on Raya.
The former sitcom star opened up about his alcohol and opioid addiction that nearly killed him while promoting his upcoming memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.”
The book, which is set to hit shelves Nov. 1, opens with a distressing scene recounting when he was hospitalized due to a drug-related experience five months after his colon burst.
“The doctors told my family that I had a 2% chance to live,” he told People. “That’s the time I really came close to my life ending. I was put on an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. Every doctor says it’s a Hail Mary. No one survives that. So the big question is why? Why was I the one that survived? There has to be some kind of reason.”
Perry was in a coma for two weeks at 49 before he miraculously regained consciousness.
“I woke up and realized I had a colostomy bag,” he remembered. “They said, ‘It’s all too messy down there. We can’t do surgery. But in about a year, you can reverse that.’ It was pretty hellish having one because they break all the time.”
His terrible experience and having to rely on a colostomy bag pushed Perry to his breaking point finally leading him to begin seeking sobriety.
“My therapist said, ‘The next time you think about taking OxyContin, just think about having a colostomy bag for the rest of your life,’ ” he shared. “And a little window opened, and I crawled through it, and I no longer want OxyContin.”
Perry is finally fully opening up about his struggles and addictions after years of sharing small portions of his story.
“I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again. I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober, and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people,” he said.
Perry did stints in rehab in 1997 and 2001. In a 2016 interview with BBC Radio 2, he said he didn’t remember three years of “Friends,” saying he was a “little out of it” for Seasons 3 through 6 of the iconic show.
The actor won’t share how long he’s been sober and admits he still counts every day sharing that he’s “grateful to be alive” but mostly grateful for his sobriety.
“Everything starts with sobriety. Because if you don’t have sobriety, you’re going to lose everything that you put in front of it, so my sobriety is right up there,” he said in a recent interview.
