#AbolishTheMonarchy trends on Twitter during queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Queen Elizabeth II may be celebrating 70 years as the British empire’s monarch with much pomp and circumstance right now — but that hasn’t drowned out the UK’s noisy fight for political change.
If #AbolishTheMonarchy trending on Twitter the same day the four-day Platinum Jubilee launches is any indication, some Brits would like to see Elizabeth be the last monarch.
The anti-monarchy group Republic has declared it would like to replace the royals with an elected head of state, especially as the unpopular — in some circles — Prince Charles would take over the throne once his mother dies.
In January, Reuters reported that polls indicate the vast majority of people in Britain support the monarchy, and the queen herself is hugely popular.
However, there is just not as much support for her eldest son and heir, Charles, and surveys suggest there is growing desire to “ditch the monarchy” among younger Britons.
One wannabe activist tweeted on Thursday: “#AbolishTheMonarchy trending during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee bank holiday is beautiful.”
Other users called it “nice” and “very refreshing” to see the phrase trending during the queen’s celebratory festivities.
Republic also tweeted a photo of its Glasgow billboard that reads “Make Elizabeth the Last.”
The phrase previously trended on the platform after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s explosive two-hour sit-down interview with chat show queen Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.
“People waking up today just realising that the British Monarchy is a classist, racist institution? Ok. Sure. #AbolishTheMonarchy,” a user wrote at the time.
Speaking of viral moments, 4-year-old Prince Louis stole the show Thursday during the Royal Air Force’s flypast, adorably covering his ears while standing next to the queen — among other cute antics — as planes soared over Buckingham Palace.
Twitter couldn’t get enough of that, either.
“Prince Louis is a whole mood next to the Queen when the planes go past,” gushed one fan on Twitter.
Comedian Michelle Collins tweeted, “Prince Louis is the only royal id like to see land a Netflix deal.”
Despite online criticism, the royal family still has plenty of Platinum Jubilee events to get through. Friday’s schedule includes A Service of Thanksgiving before the real party kicks off with the Platinum Party at the palace on Saturday.
Twenty-thousand people will watch the band Queen and Adam Lambert open the star-studded concert. Rod Stewart, Duran Duran, Andrea Bocelli and Diana Ross are also scheduled to perform in person, while Elton John will appear via video.
