Alaskan couple skate on clear ‘ice window’ that formed over lake

An Alaskan couple could be seen gliding over a surreal crystal clear “ice window” that formed over a lake during a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Luc Mehl and Sarah Mehl Himstad were skating on Lake Rabbit near Anchorage in late October while the ice was translucent due to a so-called “ice window” forming.

The window anomaly forms when cold and dry weather causes the water to freeze clear, allowing people to see to the bottom of the lake’s floor.

The condition usually only lasts about one week, Mehl told Reuters.

“And since it took ten years, you know, maybe longer, for those conditions to present this year, I think it might be another decade before we get to see something like that again,” he told the outlet.

The Alaskan native said he has never seen the effect take place throughout the last 12 years he’s been skating on the lake.

The couple shared videos of them skating on the ice, showing the blue-green water underneath underneath their feet, boulder-sized rocks and sand perfectly visible through it.

The only imperfection is the white lines made by the skaters’ blades as they traverse the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

However, Mehl warned people to take precautions before skating as some people “did fall through during that week.”
