Ali Carter secures place at 6 Red World Snooker Championship with impressive victory over Zhou Yuelong

Former Masters finalist Ali Carter booked his spot in the final stages of the 6 Red World Snooker Championship courtesy of a 6-1 win over Northern Ireland Open finalist Zhou Yuelong in Barnsley.

Carter – who lost 10-8 to Stuart Bingham in the Alexandra Palace final three years ago – produced breaks of 74, 73 and 50 to finalise his trip to Bangkok in early March.

He was joined by Zhang Anda, Chris Wakelin and Jimmy Robertson in reaching the final stage.

The four players join the top 16 seeds and 12 other invitees – including the evergreen Jimmy White, Ken Doherty and James Wattana – in securing automatic qualification for a 32-player tournament last won by 2004 UK champion Stephen Maguire in Bangkok four years ago.

Carter completed a 6-3 win over Ben Woollaston and a 6-2 victory against Elliot Slessor respectively earlier on Monday before easing past Zhou to seal his progress.

Zhang ran out a 6-3 winner against British Open semi-finalist Robbie Williams with world No. 47 Chris Wakelin downing Belgian teenager Ben Mertens 6-2 and former European Masters winner Jimmy Robertson overcoming Aaron Hill 6-3.

Robertson lost the first frame as Hill opened with a 58 break, but knocks of 69, 73, 63 and 73 was enough for the Bexhill man to advance.
