Alleged drunk driver breaks into home after crash kills female passenger
A Texas man is facing manslaughter charges after allegedly killing his passenger in a drunken wreck outside of Houston before breaking into a nearby home where he crawled into a bed and passed out.
Daniel Alexander Rodriguez-Olivares’s 2016 BMW soared over a creek “at a very high rate of speed,” and coasted for about 500 feet before crashing into the fence belonging to a business on Thursday morning around 3 a.m., the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.
The out-of-control vehicle smashed through several wooden barricades and fences, eventually falling into a retention ditch before rolling over, leaving a female passenger gravely injured, authorities said.
Rodriguez-Olivares then exited his wrecked car and “made forced entry into a nearby residence in an attempt to get help,” the release said.
“I Imagine, very scary at 3 o clock in the morning, you’re hearing what sounds like a horrific car crash, then breaking glass. It was probably very traumatic for them,” Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Sgt. B Bondurant said, according to KHOU.
The homeowners woke to the sound of glass breaking as Rodriguez-Olivares forced his way into their home.
Carlos Suarez told the outlet he was scared of what sounded like a break-in until he learned there had been a crash just outside. He said Rodriguez-Olivares yelled out for help before passing out in his bed.
”’Help me, Call the police. My wife is dead,’ something like that.” Suarez recalled Rodriguez-Olivares yelling out.
When authorities arrived they found Rodriguez-Olivares unconscious inside the home and his dead female passenger inside the wreckage outside.
The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition and showed “signs of intoxication,” according to the release.
Authorities have charged Rodriguez-Olivares with intoxication manslaughter.
Tommy Batterson, whose family business was damaged in the crash, said that while speeding was common along the street, he hadn’t seen a collision like this before.
“There’s been a few police chases down the street and everything. It’s been a pretty, pretty crazy area,” Batterson said.
“It was a little bit different today when they jumped across the entire bayou down there, came from the other side of the dead-end street and made it halfway down the block before they ran into the fence and everything,” he added.
The crash remained under investigation.
