‘American Idol’ runner-up Willie Spence dead at 23
“American Idol” runner-up Willie Spence reportedly passed away Tuesday due to injuries from a car accident. He was 23.
Douglas Now local news reported that the Season 19 star was in Tennessee at the time of the incident, but no further details are available at the time.
Katharine McPhee seems to have confirmed Spence’s death in her Instagram story, sharing videos in his memory. The singer performed a duet with the “American Idol” runner-up during his time on the show.
“I received very tragic news tonight. Sweet @williespenceofficial passed away in a car accident. Only 23 years old,” McPhee, 38, wrote. “Life is so unfair and nothing is ever promised. God rest your soul Willie. It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you.”
She also shared the last video Spence shared on his social media, which is of him singing a Christian song in a car, seemingly right before the accident.
“He posted this right before the accident,” McPhee wrote with a sobbing emoji and a broken heart emoji.
Fans of Spence took to social media to mourn the “Idol” star.
“Willie Spence passing away makes me sick to my stomach man,” a fan tweeted.
“can’t believe that willie spence is dead. i loved meeting this guy, he was so talented and kind,” another wrote.
“Hearing word the @Williespence passed away in a car accident. He was just making waves. RIP,” one person mourned.
“MY HEART IS BROKEN. God, please be with Willie Spence’s family. I cannot believe this right now. Wow…,” another said.
Spence auditioned for “Idol” with a cover of “Diamonds” by Rihanna, earning a “Yes” from all three judges and bringing him to the next round.
