Amy Schumer breaks silence on ‘Barbie’ after exiting project

Looks like Amy Schumer is actually a Barbie girl, after all.

The comedian took to Instagram on Monday to praise the new “Barbie” movie — six years after exiting the project herself.

“Really enjoyed Barbie and Oppenheimer but I think I should have played Emily Blunts role,” Schumer jokingly captioned a photo of herself wearing sunglasses and a large, unflattering sun hat. “Do better Hollywood.”

Schumer, 42, appeared to be referencing Blunt’s role as atomic bomb creator Oppenheimer’s wife, Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, in the new Christopher Nolan-directed film. “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” premiered last week.

Schumer made headlines last month for sharing why she backed out as the titular character in the “Barbie” movie during its early development in 2017.

“It really was just creative differences,” Schumer said on “Watch What Happens Live” with Andy Cohen.

“But you know, there’s a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool, so I will be seeing the movie.”

The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, and also features comedian Will Ferrell as Mattel’s CEO and “Saturday Night Live” alumna Kate McKinnon as “Weird Barbie,” while the iconic Helen Mirren narrates.

In a March 2022 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Schumer revealed why she ultimately stepped away from the role, after she initially said it was only because of a “scheduling conflict.”

“They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” she told the outlet at the time.

The “I Feel Pretty” star explained that she saw “Barbie” as a “fish-out-of-water tale,” with the doll getting kicked out of Barbieland for being imperfect.

And while she wanted her character to be an inventor, Schumer claimed the studio wanted the invention to be high heels made out of Jell-O.

“The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal,’” she said.

Despite Schumer’s absence, the “Barbie” movie, which was ultimately directed by Greta Gerwig, is topping box-office charts and amassing a fortune in ticket sales.

The film landed at No. 1, making $155 million in the first three days of domestic ticket sales.

And while Schumer thought that the movie’s initial script wasn’t feminist enough, some have criticized the movie for being too feminist.

Twitter tycoon Elon Musk called out the film on Monday, writing on the social media platform, “It you take a shot every time Barbie says the word ‘patriarchy’, you will pass out before the movie ends.”

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro also complained about the number of times “patriarchy” was said in the film.

“All you need to know about #BarbieTheMovie is that it unironically uses the word ‘patriarchy’ more than 10 times,” he wrote on Twitter.
