Amy Schumer reacts after backlash over Israeli-Palestinian conflict remarks

Amy Schumer is clapping back. 

The comedian, 42, has been posting in support of Israel following Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 attack, for which Israel has retaliated with airstrikes on Gaza, as humanitarians, protestors and Hollywood celebs call for a cease-fire. 

According to the Associated Press, more than 8,500 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis have died in the ongoing conflict. 

On Wednesday, Schumer took to took to Instagram to address the backlash she’s gotten over her comments on the current ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. 

“What I want is EVERY HOSTAGE BACK,” Schumer wrote, referring to the over 200 hostages that Hamas snatched during their Oct. 7 attack. 

“I want safety and freedom from Hamas for Palestinian and Israelies. I want safety for Jewish people and Muslims as well. Everyone. Just like you. I want peace,” she posted. 

“You will never see me wishing harm on anyone. Saying I’m Islamophobic or that I like genocide is crazy.”

She added that she’s gotten criticisms of being a “failed” comic or stealing jokes.

“I’m the most successful comedian of all time,” Schumer slammed her critics. Seemingly responding to critics who have mocked her appearance, she wrote, “I’m ugly/ fat okay Sorry you aren’t attracted to me,” she wrote. “I found someone who is,” she said, referring to husband Chris Fischer, 43, a chef she tied the knot with in 2018. “I hope you find someone too.”

She added that she wants critics who say that she’s rich to know that she’s “self made” and came from being “dirt poor.” She also added a comment appearing to distance herself from Sen. Chuck Schumer, saying that he’s her dad’s “2nd cousin once removed. I didn’t meet him until I was 25.” 

Schumer specified that she turned the comments on for this post, unlike some of her other recent posts, writing “comments on” in large letters.  

Some celebs shared their support in the comments, such as Kate Hudson, who commented, “Love you Amy,” and Orlando Bloom, who commented with heart emojis. 

Other comments were more scathing, with commenters writing, “You are centering yourself and the emotions of your upbringing while people are dying,” and, “You have shared MULTIPLE islamophobic posts in the past few weeks … horrible and delusional as well as narcissistic … You’re just a hateful person who has, in this post, made the acts of terror all about you.” 

Another commenter wrote, “it’s so nuts that people, israeli and palestinian alike, are being mercilessly slaughtered and somehow you’ve made yourself into a martyr. This *actually* might be the first funny thing you’ve said.” 

Some of Schumer’s past posts about the conflict on social media include a post referencing Martin Luther King Jr., which his daughter corrected. 

On Monday, Schumer posted a video of Martin Luther King Jr. stating that Israel “has the right to exist” and that the legendary civil rights leader would “take a stand against anti-Semitism because it’s wrong, it’s unjust, and it’s evil.” 

His daughter, Bernice King, 60, corrected Schumer, posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Amy: Certainly, my father was against anti-Semitism, as am I,” she wrote.

“He also believed militarism (along with racism and poverty) to be among the interconnected Triple Evils,” she continued. “I am certain he would call for Israel’s bombing of Palestinians to cease, for hostages to be released … and for us to work for true peace, which includes justice.”
