Ankle injury rules Tiger Woods out of 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club, Jordan Spieth to play

Tiger Woods will not play any part in the 2023 PGA Championship as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

The 47-year-old underwent “successful” fusion surgery on his right ankle in April following his withdrawal from the Masters.

Woods pulled out during the third round of the major at Augusta because of plantar fasciitis.

He was seen limping on the course and had an operation to correct an arthritis issue from a previous ankle fracture.

The American has not been not included in the field for the second major of the year, which takes place from May 18-21 at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester.

Missing the PGA Championship is another blow for Woods – it is the third time in seven years he will miss the tournament.

Woods suffered career-threatening leg injuries in a car crash in February 2021 and has only played in five tournaments since then, completing 72 holes twice.

Jordan Spieth, who withdrew from this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson event with a wrist injury, is on the entry list and only needs a PGA Championship victory to become the sixth player to achieve the Grand Slam.

“The AT&T Byron Nelson means the absolute world to me and I’m disappointed to miss it this week,” Spieth wrote in a social media post.

“Playing in front of family & friends in Dallas is one of the highlights of my year, and the tournament staff and volunteers are second to none.

“I’m focused on healing as quickly as possible and will have to evaluate my recovery week to week.

“Sincere thanks to the medical professionals who have supported me over the weekend.”

Also taking part in the competition is defending champion Justin Thomas, who defeated Will Zalatoris in a play-off last year.

Talor Gooch, who has won the past two LIV Golf events, will be joined by several other LIV participants, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and reigning Open champion Cameron Smith.

The next major after the USA PGA Championship is the US Open, which starts on June 15 at the Los Angeles Country Club in California.

The Open follows a month later at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake.
