Anthony Gordon completes transfer from Everton to Newcastle United

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Anthony Gordon from Everton.

The Magpies emerged as suitors for the 21-year-old at the start of the January transfer window.

Talk of a move appeared to turn Gordon’s head, as he was absent from Everton training for a few days as the clubs entered into talks.

Gordon returned to Finch Farm on Friday, but travelled up to Tyneside at the weekend to suggest the clubs had thrashed out a fee.

Formalities of the move were concluded on Sunday, allowing Gordon to put his name to a deal the club has simply said is ‘long tem’.

“Since I heard of the interest, I was always convinced Newcastle were for me,” Gordon told the club’s website.

“I think the fan base and the city really suits me as a person, the way the team are playing under the gaffer at the minute really suits me, and the club just look like they’re heading in the right direction.

“I feel like it’s a really big step. People haven’t seen what I’m capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club’s going, I can really excel here.”

Gordon came through the ranks at Goodison Park, being on the club’s books since 2012.

He made his debut for the Toffees in 2017 in a Europa League tie against Apollon Limassol, with his all-action style winning him many fans.

Gordon, who made his Premier League bow in 2020, had been a target for Chelsea last summer, but Everton resisted all offers for the forward.

A few months on, and with Everton fighting a battle to avoid relegation, the club elected to cash in on one of their brightest prospects.

While Everton are battling at the foot of the table, Newcastle are outside contenders for the Premier League title – albeit Champions League qualification is likely to be the target.

The arrival of Gordon will bolster manager Eddie Howe’s attacking options for the second half of the season.
