Antony to resume training at Manchester United and ‘available for selection’ amid abuse allegations

Antony will resume training with Manchester United and is “available for selection” while inquiries into abuse allegations take their course, the club said in a statement on Friday.

Antony, who denies the allegations, has not trained at the club’s Carrington base since earlier in September.

“Since allegations were first made in June, Antony has co-operated with police inquiries in both Brazil and the UK, and he continues to do so,” United said in a statement.

“As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington, and be available for selection, while police inquiries proceed. This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case.

“As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”

Antony has not featured for United since the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal on September 3.

In a statement released earlier this month, Antony said: “I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully cooperate with the police to help them reach the truth. I look forward to returning to play as soon as possible.”

United face Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday, before hosting Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday, October 3.
