Are You of Middle Eastern or North African Descent?
If you live in the United States and trace your roots to the broad and diverse region of the Middle East and North Africa, we invite you to take this survey to help us understand how you think about your racial and ethnic identity.
The U.S. Census Bureau has long counted people of Middle Eastern and North African descent as white. Though not everyone agrees with this practice, it can affect how and whether you are represented in the United States.
While our survey asks some personal questions, your answers will help drive an important conversation about race and identity. The New York Times may include your submission in an upcoming project in an effort to amplify the voices of people within this community. We will not, however, publish any information that would specifically identify you without contacting you first.
