Arkansas boy drowns in storm drain during flood

An 11-year-old Arkansas boy drowned after being swept into a storm drain during a severe storm Monday, a report said.

The boy and a 47-year-old woman were pulled into the drain by ferocious flood waters in Bentonville, according to The Arkansas Democrat & Gazette.

The 11-year-old boy was playing in the water by a retention area when he resorted to the tunnel out of fear during the storm, police said.

The child had been playing in the water near a retention area with other kids when he “became distressed,” and the woman ventured in to help, police told the newspaper.

She was rescued and taken to the hospital, according to the report. The child — who was found deeper into the tunnel — could not be resuscitated and died at the hospital, the article said.

The same deadly storm brought damaging winds, heavy rains and flash flooding up through the Midwest and killed two others.

A woman in the same tunnel as the child was discovered alive, but the boy could not be rescued when he died at the hospital.
