Arsenal 2-1 Manchester City: Superb Katie McCabe strike gives Gunners comeback, Chelsea beat Aston Villa

Katie McCabe and Frida Leonhardsen-Maanum both scored and assisted the other as Arsenal secured a come from behind 2-1 win over title rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

After Manchester United’s thrashing of Brighton on Saturday the pressure was on both sides to try and keep the pace.

City took the lead in the first half when a fine flicked header from Bunny Shaw beat Sabrina D’Angelo in the Arsenal goal.

They nearly had a second when another cross found Laura Coombs this time, but her header ricocheted off an Arsenal player and behind.

But in the second-half Arsenal got level as pinball in the City box resulted in the ball coming to Leonhardsen-Maanum off McCabe and the Norwegian fired home.

Then a little over 10 minutes later she turned provider for McCabe as she passed to the Republic of Ireland international from a corner.

McCabe then took the ball inside the box before unleashing a ferocious effort into the top corner for what proved to be the winner.

Chelsea are not going to give up their title without a fight and they claimed a 3-0 win at Aston Villa to move within a point of leaders Manchester United.

There could have been a hangover from their dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Lyon in the Champions League earlier in the week, but The Blues were utterly professional in securing the win.

Jelena Cankovic fired home a loose ball on 22 minutes to get Emma Hayes’ side on the front foot and Guro Reiten doubled the lead shortly before the interval.

Sam Kerr made the points safe with a delightful goal, her 50th in the Women’s Super League.

Meanwhile, Aggie Beever-Jones netted a late winner as Everton got the better of Tottenham 2-1.

Nicoline Sorensen had Everton in front after just four minutes but Spurs equalised in the 22nd minute through Eveliina Summanen.

But Everton would have the final say with Beever-Jones striking late to consolidate The Toffees’ place in sixth, as Tottenham remain ninth.

On a day when the men’s team parted ways with manager Brendan Rodgers, Leicester’s women’s side hauled themselves off the foot of the table with a 2-1 win over Reading.

Reading looked set to earn a point when Charlie Wellings cancelled out a goal from Sam Tierney, but deep into injury time Carrie Jones popped up with the winner for The Foxes when drilling home from eight yards.

Brighton are now bottom, but The Seagulls have two games in hand of Leicester and Reading who are the two teams directly above them.

West Ham and Liverpool played out a 0-0 draw, with the result leaving both sides just below in mid-table.
