Arsenal confirm serious knee injury and operation for Vivianne Miedema after Women’s Champions League match with Lyon
Arsenal have confirmed that Vivianne Miedema has suffered a serious knee injury and will undergo an operation after the Women’s Champions League match with Lyon.
Miedema left the field in tears on a stretcher with her leg strapped following an awkward fall on the stroke of half-time, just before Frida Maanum’s own goal gave Lyon the lead.

After the match, it was still unclear how serious Miedema’s injury was, but that has now become clear and Arsenal have taken the moment to provide an update and pledge their support for the star player.
A club statement read: “We can confirm that Vivianne Miedema suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during our UEFA Women’s Champions League match against Lyon at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.
“Viv will undergo surgery in the coming days and will, unfortunately, be ruled out for an extended period of time.
“A more detailed timescale will be established once the operation is complete.
“Everyone at Arsenal wishes Viv well in her recovery and will be providing her with all the support she needs to return to action as soon as possible.”
Arsenal will conclude their Group C campaign with a match against Zurich on December 21, knowing victory will guarantee them the top spot in Group C.
Lyon will progress with a point against Juventus on the final day of the group stage, with the Italian champions keeping their hopes of progression alive with a 5-0 win over Zurich.
