Arsenal lead race for Benjamin Pavard as Manchester United enter talks for Jonny Evans – Paper Round

Arsenal weigh up Pavard

The Mirror reports that Arsenal could move ahead of Manchester United in the race for Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard.

The paper writes: ”United had informed Bayern of their intentions of signing the France international defender – who is out of contract next summer and is available at a below market value price as a result. Liverpool had also shortlisted Pavard for a transfer this summer but did not advance their interest due to their priority of strengthening their midfield.

“Erik ten Hag had instructed United to sign a new central defender ahead of the seemingly impending exit of former club captain Harry Maguire. Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe had already left the club this summer, with Eric Bailly also set to leave, leaving only Victor Lindelof as a backup to starting central defensive pair Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

“However, the situation has been complicated by Maguire’s move to West Ham appearing to break down despite the clubs agreeing a £30million fee. The Hammers were not prepared to meet the defender’s wage packets and, as things stand, a deal may not happen.

“Conversely, Arsenal ’s need for a new defender has increased substantially due to a long-term injury suffered to new signing Jurrien Timber. Pavard would be an ideal replacement due to his strength of playing on the right-side of defence or as a central defender.”

Evans offered deal by United

United are, however, likely to recruit Jonny Evans for the rest of the season after he joined on a short-term deal over the summer.

“Manchester United are in talks with Jonny Evans over a contract for at least the rest of the season after impressing Erik ten Hag,” The Telegraph claims.

“Evans, 35, came back to Old Trafford during the summer to stay fit as a free agent following his departure from relegated Leicester and he had a short-term deal to allow him to play in friendlies. But Ten Hag has revealed he wants the Northern Ireland veteran to stay longer and add to the competition at centre-back.

“Talks with Evans are unconnected to Harry Maguire’s future. United accepted a bid from West Ham for Maguire but a deal did not progress.”

Premier League sides target Lecce defender

The Sun reports that Lecce defender Federico Baschirotto is wanted by West Ham, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United, with a bargain price of £8 million mentioned for the Italian.

“The defender recently broke into the Italy squad after a series of impressive displays for Lecce,” the outlet reports.

“The 26-year-old could now be heading to England from Serie A in a cut-price £8million deal.

“Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United have been leading the chase for Baschirotto.

“Both sides are looking to bolster their backlines before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

“And Fulham and West Ham have also been monitoring his displays and situation over recent months.”

Adams set for Bournemouth switch

The Daily Mail believes that Bournemouth are closing in on the signing of Tyler Adams from Leeds, with the midfielder missing out on a proposed move to Chelsea.

“Bournemouth are set to complete the £20million signing of Tyler Adams from Leeds,” the report states.

“The USA international is scheduled to undergo a medical in the 24 hours with a view to joining the Cherries.

“Adams was on the brink of signing a contract with Chelsea last week, but the deal broke down at the death.

“And Bournemouth – owned by American tycoon Bill Foley – have moved quickly to secure the midfielder.

“Brighton were also interested in Adams but their south coast rivals have moved quickly to secure his transfer.”
