ATP Tour 2024 calendar: When is tennis at Paris Olympics? What’s changing? Is Shanghai Masters on schedule?

The ATP Tour has released its calendar for 2024 and it features some significant changes to the current season.

The calendar has been altered due to the Paris 2024 Olympics, which will include a one-week tennis event played at Roland Garros, the home of the French Open.

The post-US Open Asia swing will continue after events including the Shanghai Masters and China Open which return later this year, and there will be five 12-day ATP Masters 1000 events.

Here’s all you need to know about what’s in store for the schedule in 2024 and what changes have been made to the calendar.

Los Cabos moves to February

The 2024 season will open with the second edition of the United Cup, which is a mixed team event played across Australia. There will be ATP 250 events in Australia and New Zealand before the Australian Open starts on January 15.

Immediately after the Australian Open there will be a week for Davis Cup qualifiers and an ATP 250 in Montpellier.

The most notable change in the first two months is Los Cabos – an ATP 250 – moving from July to February.

Los Cabos has traditionally been scheduled ahead of the North American hard-court swing, but will now be played in the week prior to the Mexican Open in Acapulco.

This was a move that Casper Ruud accidentally let slip when he was played in Mexico last month.

Indian Wells will start on March 6 followed by the Miami Open from March 20 and then it will be the clay season.

The Monte Carlo Masters is on April 7, followed by Madrid from April 24, and the Italian Open, which starts on May 8. Then it will be the French Open, which starts on May 26.

Players will be back at Roland Garros a few months later for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Olympics on the 2024 calendar

How does tennis change in an Olympic year?

As the tennis competition at the Olympics is only a one-week event it does not require too much juggling of the schedule, but in 2024 there will be four tournaments (Hamburg, Bastad, Gstaad, Newport) played in the week after Wimbledon vs three this year.

Wimbledon starts on July 1 next year and finishes on July 14.

After a four-tournament week in July 15 there will then be three tournaments (Atlanta, Kitzbuhel, Umag) in the week of July 22 before tennis starts at the Olympics on July 27.

Unlike at Tokyo 2020 there will not long travel involved to compete at the Olympics as most of the post-Wimbledon tournaments (aside from Newport and Atlanta) are in Europe. There is, though, the switch back to clay after playing on grass at Wimbledon, although all the European events after Wimbledon are also on clay.

Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will target Olympic gold – the one major title missing from his collection – in Paris.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion won bronze at Beijing 2008 but failed to crack the podium in London, Rio or Tokyo.

“I hope I’ll be able to play healthy for next year in Paris,” he said in Dubai in February.

“It’s going to be played on clay at Roland Garros, so I’m familiar with those grounds. I hope the best Olympic result for me will come there.”

For those not playing at the Olympics, the Citi Open in Washington DC will begin on July 29.

The North American summer swing starts with the Canadian Open in Montreal on August 5. The Cincinnati Masters is on August 11 and the US Open starts on August 26.

Asia swing, ATP Finals, Davis Cup Finals

After the US Open come the Davis Cup Finals group stage and the Laver Cup.

There will then be the Asia swing, including the China Open, Tokyo Open and Shanghai Masters.

This season sees the return of events in China for the first time since 2019 following the Covid-19 pandemic. The last Shanghai Masters was won by Daniil Medvedev, beating Alexander Zverev in the final.

There will not be an event played in Moscow in October due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The last Masters event of the season will be held in Paris on October 28. The Nitto ATP Finals in Turin start on November 10 and a date has not been confirmed for the Davis Cup Finals or the Next Gen Finals.

Overall there will be 63 ATP tournaments in 2024 taking place across 29 countries.
