Attorney blamed by ex-wife in suicide note resigns from firm

The ex-husband of a New York mother and former federal prosecutor who allegedly died by medically assisted suicide has resigned following a leave of absence, his former employer said in a statement.

Allan Kassenoff, a patent litigator and shareholder at Greenberg Traurig, stepped down from his role effectively immediately, the law firm has announced.

“The firm has concluded its review of the situation to determine Allan Kassenoff’s status with the firm,” the statement read. “Our primary obligation is to maintain and protect the core values and best interests of our firm, our clients, our lawyers and our professional staff.”

A spokesperson for the law firm declined to elaborate as to whether Kassenoff was urged to resign or did so voluntarily.

Kassenoff had been on leave from Greenberg Traurig amid an ongoing divorce and custody battle with Catherine Kassenoff, 54, who reportedly died by assisted suicide in Switzerland on May 27.

Catherine, who once served as special counsel to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, posted on Facebook that day that she been diagnosed with terminal cancer, but decided to end her life due to Allan’s alleged abuse and a “predatory” court system that began keeping her away from the couple’s three daughters in 2018.

In mid-March, Allan accused Catherine of trying to “destroy” him during the custody battle, which he claims cost him more than $3 million, according to emails made public by Catherine.

“Even if this court awards you my last dollar, I will never stop protecting them,” Allan wrote Catherine in an email on March 19. “Until the day I die.”

Greenberg Traurig, meanwhile, characterized the couple’s children — ages 9, 12 and 13 — as the “primary victims” in its statement Sunday, while establishing a trust fund with an independent monitor to benefit the trio. 

The endowment will be voluntarily funded by Greenberg Traurig’s attorneys and staff.

“We wish healing and privacy to the children during this very difficult situation,” the law firm’s statement concluded.

Kassenoff’s former employer said no judges or court-appointed forensic evaluators involved in the couple’s lengthy trials found evidence of alleged domestic violence by his ex-wife. He was also awarded sole legal custody, Greenberg Traurig said in a statement earlier this month.

“Nevertheless, the firm will be conducting its own investigation to determine his status with the firm,” the statement read. “In the meantime, he is taking a voluntary leave of absence to focus on his family.”

Attorney Gus Dimopoulous, who represents Allan, did not return requests for comment Monday. He previously told The Post a judge had issued an urgent order of protection against Catherine ruling out unsupervised interactions with her three daughters.

Video previously posted on social media showed Allan yelling at Catherine, saying he hated her and derided the mother of his children as a “fat, old loser” in another clip. Some observers were quick to blast the attorney.

“Hey, Allan Kassenoff — we are all the voice of Catherine,” one tweet read. “Buckle up you POS, the videos of your cruelty, abuse and manipulation are going super viral.”
