Australian diver Bridgette O’Shannessy undergoes several surgeries after shark bit her in the face

An Australian woman was bitten in the face by a shark while diving last week and had her teeth surgically removed from her skull following the attack.

Bridgette O’Shannessy, 32, was mauled by a pointer shark Friday while free-diving off a reef in Adelaide.

She was swimming with her dive partner Brian Gordon Peters when the beast struck, Perth Now reported.

Peters managed to push the animal away from her and then began applying pressure to her wounds, the outlet reported.

O’Shannessy was placed in a rescue boat and brought back to shore, according to 9 News.

Ray Tomlinson, an off-duty lifeguard, was on the beach when he heard Peters scream for help after the attack.

“I basically went over to assist getting the craft up onto the beach and securing it, at which time I realized there was a patient in the boat,” Tomlinson told 9 News. “He had applied pressure for quite an amount of time and the patient wasn’t in any stress.”

O’Shannessy underwent two surgeries at Flinders Medical Centre, where she had to have some of her teeth removed from her skull.

The diver and university student, suffered nerve damage and other injuries, according to the local outlet.

“She’s doing really well considering the circumstances,” Peters said, according to Perth Now.

She is still in the hospital recovering.
