Bayern Munich 1-2 SC Freiburg: Lucas Holer’s stoppage-time penalty sends Bayern Munich crashing out of DFB-Pokal

Lucas Holer’s penalty five minutes into added-time gave SC Freiburg a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich as they advanced to the semi-final of the DFB-Pokal.

Bayern took the lead after 19 minutes when Dayot Upamecano rose highest to head home Joshua Kimmich’s corner. It was no less than the Bavarian outfit deserved after dominating the early exchanges.

The hosts weren’t ahead for long though, Freiburg equalised just eight minutes later thanks to a wonder-strike from Nicolas Hofler. The ball sat up for the 33-year-old who thumped it on the half-volley past Yann Sommer and into the back of the net.

Bayern outclass Dortmund to take advantage in title race as Tuchel tenure begins with win

Thomas Tuchel’s side went close to taking the lead on the brink of half-time but Thomas Muller’s effort was cleared off the line by Matthias Ginter.

Bayern once again went within inches of taking the lead, this time Freiburg had the woodwork to thank. Kimmich’s delivery was met by Benjamin Pavard but he could only divert his header onto the crossbar.

Tuchel’s side really turned the screw in the final 15 minutes, penning Freiburg back in their penalty area but the visitors stood firm, Ginter and Manuel Gulde in particular dived in front of countless crosses and shots to keep the score level.

With the game heading for extra-time, Freiburg were awarded a penalty after Jamal Musiala handled in the penalty area. Holer stepped up to convert and sent Freiburg to the DFB-Pokal semi-final.

TALKING POINT – A HISTORIC NIGHT

Before last season, SC Freiburg had only ever appeared in the DFB-Pokal once in their history. Fast forward to today and they are in their second consecutive DFB-Pokal semi-final.

After the agony of losing on penalties in the final to RB Leipzig last season, Freiburg have responded in the perfect way by knocking out the heavy favourites Bayern Munich, giving them their first ever win in Munich.

Tonight’s performance and result will give Christian Streich and his side the belief that maybe, just maybe, this year could be the year they lift the DFB-Pokal for the first time ever.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH – LUCAS HOLER (SC FREIBURG)

In truth, the award could have went to any number of Freiburg players, especially those in defence such as Manuel Gulde or Matthias Ginter, but with a 94th minute winning goal to give Freiburg their first ever win in Munich, it had to go to Lucas Holer.

The 28-year-old stepped up with virtually the last kick of the game at the Allianz and had the courage and concentration to smash his effort past Yann Sommer and give Freiburg a historic win in Bavaria.
