Bayern Munich condemn Kingsley Coman racist abuse after France lose in 2022 World Cup final

Bayern Munich have issued a statement of support for their French international forward Kingsley Coman after he was subjected to racist abuse following the 2022 World Cup final.

Coman was one of two France players, along with Real Madrid’s Aurelian Tchouameni, who missed in the penalty shootout against Argentina.

Argentina won the shootout 4-2 with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez booked for his behaviour during the process.

Both Coman and Tchouameni were subjected to racist abuse online after they failed to score, as France just missed out on retaining the trophy they won in Russia in 2018.

The incident recalled the treatment of England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who were racially abused following their country’s defeat in the European Championships held in 2021, when Italy won on penalties.

All three players were targeted with racist abuse online in the aftermath of the defeat.

Coman plays for Bayern and the Bundesliga champions sent a message of support on their official Twitter account.

“The FC Bayern family is behind you, King. Racism has no place in sport or our society,” they said on Twitter.

Coman, 26, came on as a substitute for Antoine Griezmann in the 71st minute of the final.

In the fallout of the defeat and the responses online, Tchouameni disabled the comments function on his Instagram account.

The same was done by Randal Kolo Muani, who plays for Eintracht Frankfurt and who came on as a substitute in the final by manager Didier Deschamps.
