‘Beetlejuice 2’ has days left of filming after strikes end

Eccentric director Tim Burton revealed Monday that the highly anticipated sequel to his 1988 comedy “Beetlejuice” has less than two days of filming left to complete.

According to Burton, 65, the almost completed Warner Brothers-backed project was forced to shut down in May during the start of the Writer’s Guild of America strike.

“I feel grateful we got what we got,” Burton told the Independent. “Literally, it was a day and a half. We know what we have to do. It is 99 percent done.”

Little is known about the upcoming sequel aside from the fact that it continues the story of the ghoulish Beetlejuice (played once again by Michael Keaton) and his never-ending desire to cause mayhem.

Burton’s film will also see the return of Winona Ryder, 51, and Catherine O’Hara, 69, as Lydia and Delia Deetz, respectively.

The film will also feature “Wednesday” alum Jenny Ortega as Ryder’s onscreen daughter as well as Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux and several others.

Speaking to Empire magazine before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Keaton, 72, revealed that the “Nightmare Before Christmas” director wanted to make sure that any special effects used were practical.

“Beetlejuice is the most f–kin’ fun you can have working,” Keaton said to the outlet. “It’s so fun, it’s so great. And you know what it is? We’re doing it exactly like we did the first movie.”

“There’s a woman in the great waiting room for the afterlife literally with a fishing line,” continued the actor. “I want people to know this because I love it – tugging on the tail of a cat to make it move.”

Keaton is also serving as an executive producer on the film. “It has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time,” the “Birdman” star said. “Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something. F–kin’ great. It’s the most fun I’ve had working on a movie in I can’t tell you how long.”

The sequel also marks Burton’s directorial reemergence as his last film was 2019’s “Dumbo,” after which he swore he would never work with Disney again.

“The thing about ‘Dumbo,’ is that’s why I think my days with Disney are done,” Burton said last year. “I realized that I was Dumbo, that I was working in this horrible big circus and I needed to escape. That movie is quite autobiographical at a certain level.”

“Beetlejuice 2” is set to hit theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
