Beth Mead lands SPOTY 2022 crown with Ben Stokes second and Eve Muirhead third, Lionesses awarded Team of the Year

Beth Mead won the 2022 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award with Ben Stokes second and Eve Muirhead third, as the England women’s football team were awarded Team of the Year.

Mead was instrumental as part of the Lionesses side that won the Women’s European Championships last summer, winning the golden boot and the player of the tournament awards.

And this latest award is recognition for the impact she, and her team, made on the country. Sarina Wiegman, head coach of the Lionesses, won the coach of the year gong.

“Sorry, I’m speechless for once,” Mead began in her speech.

“Obviously I’m incredibly honoured to win this award.

“I’ll keep saying it – it’s a cliche – but I wouldn’t have done it without those girls over there [her England team-mates], and the team that have backed me.

“Yes I’ve got this accolade, I did my job, I scored a few goals, but I wouldn’t have done it without them.

“And I certainly wouldn’t have done it without my dad, my mum and all my family.

“But most of all, this is for women’s sport, and for women’s sport heading in the right direction. Let’s keep pushing girls, let’s keep doing the right thing.”

Here is the breakdown of all the 2022 SPOTY award winners in another brilliant year for British – and international – sport.
