Biden’s border crisis scrutinized by House GOP
The House Judiciary Committee began scrutinizing the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis on Wednesday in the first of a series of hearings dedicated to the ongoing issue.
Part one of the hearing tackled border and national security, as well as the influx of fentanyl into the US.
“Make no mistake, the Biden administration is carrying out its plan,” committee chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said in his opening statements.
“We all heard President Biden say we’re trying to make it easier for people to get here. Well they’re certainly succeeding in that.”
Among those testifying on Wednesday were two Texas county judges, an Arizona sheriff and the co-founder of an anti-fentanyl advocacy group whose son died of an overdose of the drug.
“Today, we will hear about some of the effects of Biden’s open border policies on every day Americans and the communities in which they live. We will hear about dangerous encounters with migrants … we’ll hear about the devastating effects of fentanyl on American families,” Jordan said.
“The worst part is that none of this had to happen. Under President Trump the border was secure, under President Biden there is no border — and Americans are paying the price.”
Biden, 80, has been heavily criticized for his failure to stem the record influx of migrants flowing across the border into the US.
The hearing comes just weeks after Biden made his first trip to the beleaguered US-Mexico border region since being elected.
More than 2.4 million migrants crossing were recorded at the US-Mexico border in the last fiscal year, according to the latest US Customs and Border Protection data released in October.
