Billie Eilish wins for Barbie’s ‘What Was I Made For?’ at Golden Globes 2024

What was she made for? Apparently, winning Golden Globes.

Having just turned 22 a few weeks ago, Billie Eilish won her second Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song on Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

After she and her brother, producer and co-writer Finneas triumphed for the Bond theme “No Time to Die” in 2022, the siblings came up golden again for the “Barbie” single, “What Was I Made For?”

“I was not expecting this in this moment,” said Eilish, while accepting the award alongside Finneas.

“Thank you to my brother, Finneas. You are the reason I am who I am.”

“What Was I Made For?” — which tapped into the existential crisis that the iconic Mattel doll faces in the summer blockbuster — beat out two other “Barbie” tunes: Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken.”

Eilish’s moody meditation — which is also up for both Record and Song of the Year at the Feb. 4 Grammys — also bested Bruce Springsteen’s “Addicted to Romance,” from “She Came to Me”: Jack Black’s “Peaches,” from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”; and Lenny Kravitz’s “Rustin,” from “Road to Freedom.”

After also thanking “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie, the seven-time Grammy winner reflected on experiencing her own existential crisis a year ago.

“It was exactly a year ago almost that we were shown the movie, and I was very, very miserable and depressed at the time,” said Eilish. “Writing that song kind of saved me a little bit.”

“A year later, and here we are,” she continued. “It’s really surreal. I feel incredibly, incredibly lucky; incredibly lucky and grateful.”

This was Eilish’s first appearance at the Golden Globes, because the awards were not televised in 2022. Rocking red and black hair, spectacles, an oversized jacket and thrift-store Mary Jane shoes, she was the picture of scholastic chic as she walked the red carpet with Finneas.

At the end of her acceptance speech, Eilish took a moment to fangirl out on the Hollywood audience.

“You guys scare the living hell out of me — everyone in this room! Thank you so much! This means the world!”
