Bjorn Borg to call on Roger Federer for help at Laver Cup in Vancouver – ‘He’s going to be involved’

Bjorn Borg has said he will lean on Roger Federer at this weekend’s Laver Cup, which is live and exclusive on Eurosport.

Legendary Swede, Borg will lead Team Europe in their bid to wrestle the trophy from the hands of Team World, who secured victory for the first time in 2022.

The event has moved to Vancouver, and the John McEnroe-captained Team World are strong favourites to defend the title they won in London.

Federer helped Europe secure victories in 2017, 2018 and 2019 – before retiring from the sport in the 2022 edition.

The Swiss master will be on hand in Canada, and Borg will be picking his brains this weekend.

“I think regarding Roger, he’s going to be involved with Team Europe, of course,” Borg said. “He’s here and definitely I’ve been speaking to him – not every day – but we have a good contact and he’s going to be there on Friday – the whole weekend, actually – so that’s a big help.

“He’s been around for many years playing for Team Europe so that’s a big help, of course.

“The Big Three (Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic) are not playing but I’m very happy. Like I said before, I’m very happy with my team here.

“I have six great players and I’m sure they’re going to do really well so I have no complaints.”

Borg spoke confidently about his team taking the trophy back to European soil.

“I have a good team,” Borg said. “I’m very happy with my team.

“I think it’s going to be a very interesting match.

“Unfortunately we lost last year in London – that was a very, very big disappointment. I know all these six guys are very eager to bring back the trophy to Europe.”

Let’s get it on

McEnroe leads a team that is strongly fancied by the bookmakers, and the American is ready for the challenge.

“We’re excited,” McEnroe said. “I think anyone that followed knows I love it and what it represents to me idolising Rod (Laver) and having Roger part of it and the team spirit which I always loved as Davis Cup so awesome to be back.

“I love our chances, love our team so as the great referee Mills Lane used to say in the boxing ring, ‘Let’s get it on.'”
