Brandeis University Student Killed and 26 Injured in Shuttle Bus Crash

One Brandeis University student was killed late on Saturday and 26 other students were injured after the shuttle bus they were in crashed into a tree in Waltham, Mass., just west of Boston, the authorities said.

Officials did not immediately release the conditions of those hurt but said that the students’ injuries were of “varying degrees.” The bus driver was also injured.

The bus was taking the students from a hockey game at nearby Northeastern University, Marian T. Ryan, the Middlesex district attorney, said in a statement. Northeastern is about 13 miles from Brandeis.

No charges have been filed, and the cause of the crash, which happened around 10:45 p.m., is under investigation by her office and the Waltham Police Department.

Waltham police identified the student who died as Vanessa Mark, 25, an undergraduate, Julie Jette, a university spokeswoman, said on Sunday.

“Given the tragedy that our community is experiencing, Brandeis has canceled classes scheduled for Monday and Tuesday,” the university said in a statement. “This will enable some students to return to family and friends sooner than the normal holiday schedule would have allowed. For students who will remain on campus, we will have additional opportunities to gather and receive support.”

According to the university, the bus was owned by Joseph’s Transportation, based in Medford, Mass. Federal records indicate that the company has a fleet of 30 vehicles.

The company did not immediately return phone and email messages on Sunday.
