Brendan Fraser nabs Golden Globe nomination — despite vow not to attend
Brendan Fraser has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his highly lauded role in Darren Aronofsky’s new drama “The Whale” — but you won’t catch the actor at the upcoming Jan. 10 awards show.
The 54-year-old has vowed to boycott the ceremony organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, claiming that its former president, Philip Berk, sexually assaulted him. Berk, 89, has strenuously denied the allegations.
“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” Fraser told GQ in an interview last month, defiantly declaring that he will “not participate” in a Golden Globes show.
“It’s because of the history that I have with them,” he added. “And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that.”
The Post has reached out to both Fraser and the HFPA for comment.
In a separate interview with GQ in 2018, Fraser claimed that the alleged assault occurred at a luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 2003.
“His [Berk’s] left hand reaches around, grabs my ass cheek, and one of his fingers touches me in the taint. And he starts moving it around,” the actor alleged. “I felt ill. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry.”
Fraser claimed that he “became depressed” following the incident, saying: “I was blaming myself and I was miserable — because I was saying, ‘This is nothing; this guy reached around and he copped a feel.’ “
Fraser did not go public about the alleged assault at the time, but his reps asked the HFPA for a written apology — which they subsequently received from Berk.
“My apology admitted no wrongdoing, the usual ‘If I’ve done anything that upset Mr. Fraser, it was not intended and I apologize,’ ” Berk told GQ in 2018. He added that Fraser’s version of events was “a complete fabrication.”
The HFPA conducted an investigation that same year which concluded that while “Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that it was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.”
Berk remained a voting member of the HFPA until 2021 when he was ousted after he sent an email to fellow members describing Black Lives Matter as a “racist hate movement.”
The Golden Globes have come under fire in recent years, with the HFPA called out over a lack of diversity and ethical missteps. Last year’s ceremony did not air on primetime after it was dropped by NBC.
However, the organization has pledged reform and will go on with the 2023 show — despite Fraser’s pledge to boycott the ceremony.
Fraser is nominated for best actor in a drama film for his role as a 600-pound professor in “The Whale.” He goes up against Austin Butler in “Elvis,” Hugh Jackman in “The Son,” Bill Nighy in “Living” and Jeremy Pope in “The Inspection.”
“The Whale” has been touted as Fraser’s “comeback” role.
The flick premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September, where the star broke down in tears during a six-minute standing ovation for his performance.
