Later, Mark Selby faces Jack Lisowski in arguably the tie of the last eight while Tom Ford locks horns with Xiao Guodong.

Best-of-nine

A reminder that this stage of the competition means it’s effectively a first to five frames scenario.

H2H

It looks like this is the first tour meeting between He Guoqiang and Vafaei while Williams leads his match-up with Fan 1-0 having prevailed 5-3 in the German Masters back in 2018.

Selby beats Gilbert on final black to set up quarter-final clash with Lisowski at British Open

Mark Selby beat David Gilbert in a final-frame decider to reach the quarter-finals of the British Open in a late-night finish in Cheltenham.

It was not vintage snooker on display at the Centaur in Cheltenham, but there was no shortage of drama for a match that finished after midnight.

It boiled down to a battle on the final black, and in dramatic scenes at 00:38, Gilbert saw the white go in-off to hand Selby the win.
