Cameron Norrie excited to double up and ‘pick brains’ of Andy Murray at Queen’s and eyes Davis Cup role

Cameron Norrie says he will “pick the brains” of Andy Murray when the British pair team up for the doubles at Queen’s this week.

British No. 1 Norrie kicked off his campaign in London with a straight-sets win over Miomir Kecmanovic on Monday, but he will be fighting on two fronts leading up to Wimbledon.
Murray, who won the Nottingham Open on Sunday for his second Challenger title in a week, will pair up with Norrie in the doubles – and the world No. 13 is planning to make the most of his time with the three-time Grand Slam winner.

“I texted him and asked if he wanted to play doubles here and he said: ‘let’s do it’,” Norrie explained.

“I’m looking forward to getting out on the court with him and for sure I’ll pick his brains on a few things.

He added: “I always wanted to share the court with him and play here for both home tournaments for us.

“I think it would be cool and maybe it could be an option for the Davis Cup as well.

“There are a few very good doubles teams that we have already, but it could be another one.”

Reflecting on his 6-4 7-6(5) victory over Kecmanovic, fifth seed Norrie was satisfied with his efforts on the opening day of action at Queen’s.

It was the first match the 27-year-old has played since losing in the third round of the French Open, and he will face Milos Raonic or Jordan Thompson next.

“It was a good match, there were a few nerves out there for my first match on the grass.

“I’d had such good preparation and I was playing really well in practice so I wanted to do the same on the match court.

“I started well, was up a break, and he fought back to break back. It was a good match, I was able to win a couple of points on some of the longer points, and I played a really solid second set.

“Good to get over the line and win that first one, for sure.”

Murray will begin his Queen’s campaign against seventh seed Alex de Minaur on Tuesday as the 36-year-old goes on the hunt for a sixth title at the event.
