The 27-year-old defeated Rio reigning champion Alcaraz 5-7 6-4 7-5 to collect a fifth ATP Tour title of his career, and the first of the current campaign. He won in Los Cabos and Indian Wells in 2021, and Lyon and Delray Beach in 2022.
Norrie, ranked No. 12 in the world going into the tournament, had little trouble as he raced to win the first set 6-2, breaking his opponent twice.
The same score looked to be repeating itself in the second set but with the scores at 5-2, Wu briefly pushed back before Norrie held his nerve and serve – sending down four aces – for the win. He has now won 18 matches on the tour this season, losing just three.
Norrie will play the winner of Matteo Berrettini and Taro Daniel next.
24-year-old Wu had beaten Alexander Shevchenko in the qualifying round before getting past Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the first round proper.
The next round will be played on Sunday after the rest of the current round is completed.
Elsewhere, Casper Ruud beat Diego Schwartzman 6-2 6-3. The fourth seed will face Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin in the next round.
