Car plows into Berwick crowd raising money for Nescopeck fire victims

A man plowed his car through a crowd of people in Pennsylvania on Saturday, leaving one person dead and 17 others injured before he fled and killed a woman in a nearby town, cops said.

The crazed driver drove through a crowd outside of the Intoxicology Department bar and restaurant in Berwick at around 6:15 p.m. as they attended a benefit for victims of a massive fatal fire that killed 10 people last week, according to police and the Times Leader.

The man then assaulted and killed a woman in Necopeck, Pennsylvania State Police said. Cops didn’t describe the nature of the assault or offer further details of where it took place.

The man hasn’t been identified, but is in custody and awaiting criminal charges, state police said in a statement.

Cops are planning to issue an update on the case and said the “investigations are very active.”

The status of the 17 wounded by the car attack wasn’t clear, but all had been hospitalized, according to Trooper Anthony Petroski.

The driver apparently targeted a crowd that had been attending a day-long event to raise money for the victims of  house fire in Nescopeck that killed seven people, including three children, according to WNEP.

The victims of the blaze were all related and included children aged 5, 6 and 7 years old.
