Carlos Alcaraz will seek help from psychologist to avoid cramping issues against Novak Djokovic in Wimbledon final

Carlos Alcaraz has said he will enlist the help of his psychologist in a bid to ensure there is no repeat of the cramping that hampered him during his loss to Novak Djokovic in semi-finals of the French Open.

Alcaraz breezed past Daniil Medvedev to set up the Wimbledon final everyone had been craving against Djokovic.

It hands Alcaraz a chance to exact revenge for his defeat at Roland-Garros.

Alcaraz was favourite to secure victory in Paris, but he was struck down by cramps after levelling the match at one set apiece.
The world No. 1 said in the aftermath of his defeat to Djokovic that the issue was mental rather than physical.

With Djokovic lying in wait in the Wimbledon final, Alcaraz was probed on what his plans would be to ensure there’s no repeat of the cramping issues.

“I try to get into the court with not as much nerves as I probably had in French Open, in the semi-final,” Alcaraz said. “I try to pull out all nerves, try to enjoy that moment because probably in the semi-final at the French Open I didn’t enjoy at all in the first set.

“I’ll do something different from the match. I prepare for the match a little bit different from French Open.

“It’s going to be different for me. I hope not to get cramp during the final.

“I think I’ll be better on Sunday.”

Asked if he had enlisted the help of a mental coach, Alcaraz said: “I have a psychologist that I work with since the beginning of 2020.

“She helps me a lot. I will talk with her how to prepare for the match, that important moment for me. It is not going to be easy. But I’ll talk with her.”

Alcaraz is a Grand Slam champion, having won the US Open last year, but he would place victory at Wimbledon above his triumph in New York.

“Probably is going to be, I mean, the best moment of my life – probably,” the 20-year-old said. “Playing a final here in Wimbledon is something that I dreamed about when I started playing tennis.

“As I said before, it’s even better playing against Novak. It’s going to be a really emotional moment for me. But I’ll try to stay calm in that moment.

“For Novak it is one more day, one more moment. For me, it’s going to be the best moment of my life I think.”
