Carrie Fisher’s ‘magical’ final film gets release date 7 years after death

Carrie Fisher’s final film will finally see an audience — seven years after her death.

The “Star Wars” icon wrapped filming for “Wonderwell” six weeks before she died on Dec. 27, 2016, after suffering a heart attack.

Now, the movie is slated to premiere in theaters and also will be available digitally on June 23, Deadline reported Wednesday.

While a trailer has yet to be released, the film’s official synopsis reads: “A coming-of-age fairy tale set between modern-day Italy and an imaginary realm just beyond, ‘Wonderwell’ follows Violet [played by Kiera Milward], a naive and inquisitive 12-year-old girl on a thrilling journey that transforms her world forever.”

Director Vlad Marsavin told the outlet that the film took seven years to come together due to Fisher’s unexpected death, the COVID-19 pandemic and visual effects challenges after the shoot that stretched the budget.

“Now is the perfect time to share [Fisher’s] magical on-screen moments as Hazel,” Marsavin told Deadline.

“Carrie was full of energy during filming and even celebrated her 60th birthday with us in Italy where we shot the movie,” he continued.

“After a night shoot, which went on until 2 a.m., she invited the whole team to celebrate with her and the party ended up being shut down by the police because it was deemed a little too loud,” Marsavin added. “Her passing was very emotional for the whole team.”

Singer Rita Ora, Nell Tiger Free and Sebastian Croft round out the cast.

Ora told Deadline that “working alongside Carrie Fisher was one of those experiences that you never forget.”

“Wonderwell” will include a dedication to the late actress and author, according to Marsavin.
