Celebrities react to Queen Elizabeth’s death
Queen Elizabeth II — the longest-reigning monarch in British history — died “peacefully” this afternoon at 96, sending shockwaves around the world.
Buckingham Palace announced that the British monarch passed “peacefully” at Balmoral at 1:30 p.m. EST on Thursday.
The Queen’s cause of death has yet to be revealed however the tragic announcement broke just hours after the Palace had revealed that doctors had been “concerned for Her Majesty’s health.”
Her Highness — who was equally renowned for her devotion to royal tradition and love of Corgis — touched myriad lives during her record 70-year-reign. Along with numerous tributes from UK citizens and her royal court, fellow world leaders, rock icons and other iconic figures from around the globe came together to mourn the iconic monarch’s passing.
“Thank you Ma’am, for everything,” Paddington the Bear, who recently filmed a video with the Queen, sorrowfully said.
Singer and friend to the royal family, Sir Elton John, released a statement on Thursday, noting: “Along with the rest of the nation, I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s passing. She was an inspiring presence to be around, and lead the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace.”
Rolling Stones member Sir Mick Jagger posted on social media: “For my whole life Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II has always been there. In my childhood I can recall watching her wedding highlights on TV. I remember her as a beautiful young lady, to the much beloved grandmother of the nation. My deepest sympathies are with the Royal family.”
“Today is a very sad day not just for our country but for the entire world. I’m deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved Monarch, Her Majesty The Queen. She will be remembered for her steadfast loyalty and service and my thoughts are with the royal family at this incredibly sad time,” Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham wrote.
“I mourn with my country the passing of our greatest Queen. With a heavy heart I say it is devastating the thought of England without Queen Elizabeth II,” rock star Ozzy Osbourne stated on Twitter.
Janet Jackson posted a throwback snap of herself meeting the monarch, writing: “May you Rest In Peace Queen.”
“Rest In Peace, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Graceful, dedicated, elegant, unforgettable. Today and always we will remember her as one of the greatest leaders our world has ever seen. I send my love and condolences to the Royal Family,” Kris Jenner said.
The Chelsea Football Club added: “Chelsea Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We join those mourning in the UK and across the world. We would like to send our condolences to the Royal Family and everyone affected by this very sad news.”
Bravo star Andy Cohen simply posted an art piece featuring the Queen.
“I don’t know why I’m sobbing. Silly really. Oh dear,” lamented UK actor and comedian Stephen Fry.
Whoopi Goldberg expressed her condolences on ” Twitter, writing, “Several years ago, I met Queen Elizebeth at The Royal Variety Performance of 2009. As she approached me, all i could think of was WTH?? I’m an American kid from the projects and I’m in the company of the Queen of England. I was in awe. Rest In Peace. God Save the King.”
“To my British friends and colleagues. God Bless the Queen and the Royal Family. Our hearts are with you and the people of the United Kingdom today,” the former “The View” host Meghan McCain tweeted.
“Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at age 96. My thoughts are with the royal family and with the people of the United Kingdom and truly around the world who mourn her passing. In her time, the Queen saw a country and indeed a world transformed. There shall be none other like her,” “Star Trek” actor George Takei said.
“We have lost one of the greatest women in the world,” fashion designer Donatella Versace captioned a portrait of the Queen on Instagram. “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II showed us how to live our lives. She lived with grace, fortitude, hard work, loyalty and kindness. She was an inspiration to us all. I send my deep and personal condolences to King Charles III and all of the royal family.”

“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” icon Lisa Vanderpump penned on Instagram: “We knew this day was inevitable but such overwhelming sadness at the loss of one of the most inspirational women the world has known. Her reign was exemplary as she saw our nation through so many crises. Not just a monarch but also a matriarch to our country and the commonwealth. Heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family. Our hearts are broken.”
Bill Gates wrote: “I feel honored to have met HM Queen Elizabeth, and I am very sad to hear of her passing. My deepest condolences to the Royal Family and the British people.”
World leaders also joined in mourning the monarch.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 50, penned a tribute on Twitter, writing: “It was with the heaviest of hearts that we learned of the passing of Canada’s longest-reigning Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was a constant presence in our lives – and her service to Canadians will forever remain an important part of our country’s history.”
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote: “It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On behalf of the people, we extend sincere condolences to the @RoyalFamily, the entire United Kingdom and the Commonwealth over this irreparable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
“I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth II and the people of the UK,” Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates wrote. “Her Majesty was a close friend of the UAE and a beloved & respected leader whose long reign was characterized by dignity, compassion & a tireless commitment to serving her country.”
The 39th U.S. president Jimmy Carter said in a statement following the Queen’s death: “Her dignity, graciousness, and sense of duty have been an inspiration, and we join the millions around the world in mourning a remarkable leader.”
Former president Bill Clinton said in a statement: “Hillary [Clinton] and I mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and we join with people across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and all around the world, in giving thanks for her extraordinary life. Throughout her remarkable 70-year reign, she led Britain through great transformations with unfailing grace, dignity, and genuine care for the welfare of all its people. In sunshine or storm, she was a source of stability, serenity, and strength.”
